Celtic Home Blessing

Here is a Celtic home blessing rite from Mara Freeman’s book, Kindling the Celtic Spirit. Mara is a past presider of the Order of Bards, Ovates, and Druids.

Celtic Home Blessing

“O’ Great Goddess, I ask for your blessing on this my home, my hearth, my household.”

Light a candle and place it at the center of the living room. A white candle is preferable but any will do.

“O’ Brighid, Goddess of hearth and home, I ask that this flame might be blessed in your name, that it may purify and cleanse this home, this place.”

Pour water into your sacred chalice and hold it aloft while speaking the following prayer:

“O’ Brighid, Goddess of well and flame, I ask that this water might be consecrated in your name, that it may cleanse and purify, and bless this home. O’ Brighid, please bless this house from site to stay; from beam to wall; from end to end; from ridge to basement; from balk to roof-tree; from found to summit; from found to summit.”

Take the chalice to each room in the house and sprinkle the blessed water in the four corners and center of each room. Then carry the chalice around your house three times, sprinkling the blessed water as you go.

“A blessing upon your home, Baile. (Ball-eh),

A blessing upon your hearth, Teallach (Towel-ah),

A blessing upon your sacred grove, Garrán(Gar-on),

A blessing upon your shrine, Serín (Serene),

A blessing upon your tallest grass, Féar (Fee-er).

A blessing upon your faithful friends, Cara(Car-ah),

A blessing upon the children of this home, Clan(Clan),

A blessing upon the household helpers, Cúnamh(Coon-ah),

A blessing upon your parents, Tuismithaoir(Tish-mah-hor),

A blessing upon your work, Obair (Oh-ber),

A blessing upon your wealth, Maoin (Mween),

A blessing upon your kith and kin, Teaghlach(Tie-lock),

A blessing upon this place of magic, DraÍocht (Dree-ock-t),

A blessing upon the roads we travel, Taisteal(Tash-till),

A blessing upon you in light and darkness, Solas(Sall-us), Dorcha (Door-hah),

Each night and day of your life, Saol (Seal),”

“O’ Goddess, O’ Brighid of the hearth, I thank you for your blessing!”

The home blessing ritual is complete when the candle in the living room is extinguished.
