“I am the eagle on the cliff”
~ Amergin
“He clasps the crag with crooked hands;
Close to the sun in lonely lands,
Ring'd with the azure world, he stands.
The wrinkled sea beneath him crawls;
He watches from his mountain walls,
And like a thunderbolt he falls.”
~ “The Eagle” by Alfred, Lord Tennyson
Amergin summons the imagery of the Irish Golden Eagle flying high over the land, the master of the skies surveying all, focusing on its prey, and diving like the lethal lightning bolt to strike. The Eagle sees the big picture but can focus on minute details. This is juxtaposed by the Mouse, whose focus is limited to what is immediately around it. The Mouse has wisdom, too, for it is essential to pay attention to the opportunities and threats facing us, but the Eagle shows us how to fly above and view things objectively. By calling upon and identifying with the Eagle, Amergin is channeling strength, power, grace, and vision. Through an Eagle’s eyes, we see our life in the broader context and perceive the meaning of good, beneficial, or troubling or traumatic events within our greater story. With clear vision, we fly high above the rugged terrain and refocus on our life goals. When the time is right, we strike like a lightning bolt. Becoming the Eagle, we are strong, graceful, and adequate to the tasks before us. What is it like to fly high and free over life’s obstacles?
